Can you take domestic flights or trains during China 240-hour transit?

A permitted-area guide for checking domestic flights, trains, city changes, and mainland connections during a 240-hour visa-free transit stay.

Short answer

You can use domestic transport during a 240-hour visa-free transit stay only when every mainland stop remains inside the permitted area that applies to your route. Do not assume that 240 hours allows unrestricted travel across China: confirm the official port-and-area table, the entry and exit ports, and every domestic airport or station before booking.

  • Keep the exact entry and exit ports with permitted-area notes.
  • Record the stay deadline and current official consultation routes.

Printing this page also keeps the guide answer and visible source links with this checklist.

Start with the permitted area, not the travel time

The policy allows eligible travelers to stay within designated areas for no more than 240 hours. The geographic permission is separate from whether a flight or train can physically reach the next city before the deadline.

  • Find the entry port in the current NIA port-and-permitted-area appendix.
  • Write down every mainland city, airport, and railway station on the itinerary.
  • Remove or replace any domestic stop that falls outside the applicable permitted area unless you hold another valid entry basis.

Check both ends of every domestic segment

A domestic connection can change the policy analysis even when the international origin and onward region remain valid. Check the departure point, arrival point, overnight location, and final mainland exit port as one chain.

  • Do not infer that two eligible international ports are automatically connected by a permitted domestic journey.
  • Check a same-day domestic air connection as carefully as a multi-day rail side trip.
  • Keep enough margin for baggage collection, railway or airline check-in, and border formalities without treating that margin as extra permitted stay.

Keep the international transit proof clear

Domestic tickets do not replace the confirmed onward arrangement to a third country or region. Keep the complete route easy for the arriving carrier and immigration officer to read, especially when bookings are split across airlines, railways, ferries, or other operators.

  • Show the immediate origin before mainland entry and the first region after mainland exit.
  • Keep dated, confirmed onward proof and every domestic segment available offline.
  • Check that a domestic reroute has not changed the mainland exit port or pushed departure beyond the issued deadline.

Retest the route after any disruption

A cancellation, missed train, airport switch, or replacement booking can move the itinerary outside the permitted area. Freeze the original and replacement records, then seek case-specific guidance before making the new domestic move.

  • Ask the carrier what it can confirm and transport you on; ask immigration authorities what the transit permission allows.
  • Contact 12367 or the local exit-entry authority before expiry when the replacement route or deadline is uncertain.
  • Do not assume that disruption automatically expands the permitted area or extends the stay.

Before you rely on this answer

China travel rules and app behavior can change by city, route, account, passport, airline, and local inspection practice. Treat this page as a traveler-friendly starting point, then verify official or provider details before booking or packing anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel anywhere in China for 10 days under the 240-hour policy?

No. The stay is limited to the permitted areas in current official guidance, even when the route fits within 240 hours.

Can I take a domestic train during visa-free transit?

Only if the complete journey remains within the permitted area for the route. Check both stations and every intermediate or overnight stop against current official guidance.

Can I take a domestic flight before leaving China?

A domestic flight may be possible when both airports and the resulting exit route stay within the applicable permitted area. Do not infer permission from flight availability alone.

What if a cancellation sends me through another Chinese city?

Save the original and replacement bookings and obtain case-specific carrier and immigration guidance before accepting a move that changes the port, permitted area, or departure deadline.
