How to use Xi'an Metro with a QR code or ticket
A Xi'an-specific first-ride guide to choosing a live QR service or physical ticket, checking the limited overseas-card station route, and taking an unresolved gate or fare record to station staff.
For a first Xi'an Metro ride, choose one entry method that is already ready before the gate: a current QR service in the Xi'an Metro app, WeChat, Alipay, or UnionPay route, or a physical ticket from the station. Shaanxi's government says Xi'an Metro supports those QR services and physical single, day, commemorative, Chang'an Tong, and national interoperable transit cards. The same notice identifies 13 named stations where the customer-service centre accepts certain overseas cards for ticket purchases through staffed POS service; it does not say that every station, gate, card, app, account, device, language setting, identity check, fare, transfer, or journey will work. If the phone route is not ready, use the current station ticket route and ask staff to resolve a failed entry, exit, or fare record before trying another method.

Works without signal
Save before you go
Run a short no-signal rehearsal instead of assuming every app is ready.
- Open downloaded maps or language tools in airplane mode.
- Save the exact Chinese hotel and station names.
- Keep account recovery and itinerary access independent of one phone.
Printing this page also keeps the guide answer and visible source links with this checklist.
Emergency numbers in China
Call only for a real emergency. Say the exact location first; ask nearby staff to help communicate when safe.
Choose one ready route before the first gate
Do not make your first Xi'an journey depend on an untested app, a low battery, and an unfamiliar interchange. Decide whether a live QR route from your own phone is ready or whether a physical ticket is clearer. Save the complete Chinese station name and direction before entering the paid area, and keep a separate fallback for a late arrival, failed app, or uncertain transfer.
- Open the current official map or a confirmed destination record and use the exact station name, not only an attraction nickname or hotel marketing name.
- Keep enough battery, brightness, and data to show a live code; a screenshot, code from another city, or successful retail payment does not prove a Xi'an gate is ready.
- Do not give an unlocked phone, payment code, card details, password, passport, or verification message to an unofficial helper in a queue.
Treat the QR route as a live app and payment setup
Shaanxi's government lists the Xi'an Metro app, WeChat transit QR, Alipay transit QR, and UnionPay as QR-code travel services. Xi'an's municipal international-consumer guidance says inbound visitors can use Alipay scanning for public transport, but neither source promises that every overseas wallet, card, app-store region, phone number, language setting, identity check, payment authorisation, gate, fare, transfer, or service feature will work. Open the responsible provider's current route before a time-sensitive journey and follow its live terms and prompts.
- Confirm that the code is for Xi'an Metro and is current before you enter; do not rely on an old screenshot or another person's code.
- Use the same ready method for the full rail journey when the live instructions require it, rather than assuming another wallet or card can close an entry record.
- If the required account, identity, payment, or language step is unclear or cannot be completed safely, move to the physical-ticket route instead of guessing or sharing sensitive information.
Use a ticket or staffed overseas-card route when it is clearer
Xi'an Metro's published payment options include physical single tickets and day tickets. Its May 2025 operator notice says one-day and three-day tickets are available as electronic products in the Xi'an Metro app and as physical cards at station customer-service centres; use those period products only after checking that their validity and coverage fit the actual trip. Separately, Shaanxi's government says customer-service centres at 13 named stations—covering places such as Xi'an North Railway Station, Bell Tower, Yongningmen, Xiaozhai, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi'an Railway Station, Huaqingchi, Qinling West, Olympic Sports Center, and airport stations—accept listed international card networks through staffed POS service for ticket purchases. That is a designated-station purchase route, not a promise of direct foreign-card gate entry or acceptance at every station.
- At a named designated station, ask the customer-service centre whether the current overseas-card POS route is available for the exact ticket you need before relying on it.
- At any station, follow the live machine or staff instructions for fare, accepted payment, change, ticket validity, and the exact destination; do not assume a day ticket, machine, or card will fit every visitor plan.
- Keep a physical ticket until you have exited the paid area, and do not buy a second method to force an exit after a QR or gate record may already exist.
Move a failed gate, ticket, or fare record to station staff
A red gate, unread code, returned payment, wrong platform, or missed interchange does not by itself settle the fare record. Step aside, retain the ticket, phone screen, and receipt, then ask the station to check the current entry record, fare, and route before trying another method. Xi'an's January 2026 municipal update says service teams at key stations provide route consultation and passenger assistance; the designated-station external-card route is also explicitly handled at customer-service centres. Follow the current station and responsible provider instructions for any unresolved case rather than repeatedly rescanning or switching cards.
- For a rail, airport, hotel, or last-service connection, separately confirm live operating hours, transfer walks, terminals, and the responsible transport provider's instructions.
- Keep any pending payment record until the responsible wallet, issuer, or provider confirms the result; do not disclose bank or identity details to bystanders offering a transport fix.
- If the Metro route is no longer workable because of luggage, accessibility, timing, or payment, use an official taxi, ride-hailing, hotel, or transport-provider fallback instead of an off-app offer.

Frequently asked questions
Can overseas visitors use a QR code on Xi'an Metro?
Shaanxi's government lists the Xi'an Metro app, WeChat transit QR, Alipay transit QR, and UnionPay as QR-code services, and Xi'an's municipal guidance says inbound visitors can use Alipay scanning for public transport. Neither source guarantees approval for every overseas wallet, card, account, device, identity check, gate, fare, transfer, or journey, so complete the live setup before a time-sensitive ride and keep a physical-ticket fallback ready.
Can I buy an Xi'an Metro ticket with an overseas bank card?
Shaanxi's government says that customer-service centres at 13 named Xi'an Metro stations accept listed international card networks through staffed POS service for ticket purchases. It does not say that every station, ticket machine, gate, issuer, card, or fare is covered, so ask the current customer-service centre before depending on that route.
Are Xi'an Metro day tickets available?
Xi'an Metro's May 2025 operator notice says one-day and three-day tickets are available electronically in its app and as physical cards at station customer-service centres. Check the current terms, activation, validity, coverage, and payment route before buying, because they may not fit every itinerary.
What should I do if my Xi'an Metro QR code or ticket fails?
Step aside without forcing the gate, retain the ticket, phone screen, and receipt, then ask the station to check the current entry record, fare, and route before trying another method. Xi'an's municipal update says station service teams provide route consultation and passenger assistance; use the current station and responsible-provider instructions for the unresolved case.
