How to use Xiamen Metro with a transport QR code

A Xiamen-specific first-ride guide to the Alipay transport code available to foreign visitors, keeping the live code setup separate from station-staff and accessibility support.

Short answer

For a first Xiamen Metro journey, open the Xiamen Transport QR Code in Alipay's Transport feature before reaching the gate, then keep a staffed fallback. Xiamen's transport authority says that, since July 12, 2024, the code has been available in Alipay for residents, visitors, and foreign visitors and can be used for the Metro, BRT, regular buses, resident ferry routes, and Haicang rural transport. The foreign-affairs office says foreign tourists can apply through Alipay. Those announcements do not guarantee that every overseas account, card, wallet, phone, app version, identity check, code, gate, fare, transfer, or journey will work. If the current code is not already ready, step aside and ask visible station staff which live ticket or payment route fits the journey instead of repeatedly trying a gate.

Works without signal

Save before you go

Run a short no-signal rehearsal instead of assuming every app is ready.

  • Open downloaded maps or language tools in airplane mode.
  • Save the exact Chinese hotel and station names.
  • Keep account recovery and itinerary access independent of one phone.

Printing this page also keeps the guide answer and visible source links with this checklist.

Set up one live Xiamen transport code before the gate

Use the current Xiamen Transport QR Code path shown in Alipay's Transport feature, not a screenshot, old blog instruction, or a code from another city. Xiamen's transport authority says the code is integrated in Alipay and can cover the Metro, BRT, regular buses, resident ferry routes, and Haicang rural transport. Its foreign-affairs office specifically says foreign tourists can apply for the code through Alipay. The provider's live setup, payment, identity, privacy, and service screens decide whether a particular account is eligible.

  • Complete the current provider prompts while you have time, data, battery, and an independent way to pay; a working shop payment or travel code elsewhere does not prove Xiamen Metro gate access.
  • Save the complete Chinese station name, line, direction, and destination before entering the paid area. Keep a map result separate from a booking, hotel address, or ferry timetable that needs its own confirmation.
  • Use the same active code route for the journey and keep the phone usable through exit. Do not share an unlocked phone, payment code, card details, password, passport, or verification message with an unofficial helper in a queue.

Keep Metro, BRT, bus, and ferry choices separate

The published Xiamen transport-code announcement spans five travel settings, but a shared code does not make every transfer, gate, stop, timetable, fare, boarding area, or last service interchangeable. Treat the current code screen and the responsible operator's signs as the decision point for the exact vehicle you are about to use. For an airport, rail, island, or late-arrival connection, confirm the precise station or pier, boarding side, and live operating notice before committing to a route.

  • For Metro or BRT, follow the entry, exit, and transfer instructions at the current station rather than assuming that a bus or ferry scan works the same way.
  • For resident ferry routes, confirm the responsible ferry operator's live ticket, boarding, identity, weather, and sailing instructions separately; the transport-code announcement does not confirm a particular sailing or visitor itinerary.
  • If a connection is time-sensitive, keep a ready official taxi, ride-hailing, hotel, or transport-provider fallback rather than accepting an off-app offer.

Move a failed gate or fare record to station staff

A red gate, unread code, missing entry or exit record, wrong platform, or missed interchange does not settle the active fare record. Step aside, retain the phone screen and any receipt, then ask the visible station staff to identify the current entry record and the next supported ticket or payment route before trying another code or gate. Do not force a barrier, follow another passenger, or buy another fare medium to solve a possible open journey until staff direct the next step.

  • Describe the exact Chinese station name, line, approximate entry time, and the message shown by the code or gate. Keep those details on your own phone; do not hand over passwords or verification messages.
  • If the issue is an Alipay account, payment authorisation, or code activation problem, use the responsible provider's current in-app support after the station has clarified the fare record. A station cannot promise that the provider will approve a card or account.
  • For a late train, hotel, or ferry connection, separately check live operating hours and the responsible operator's instructions. A gate repair does not promise an onward connection.

Arrange accessibility help before a journey when needed

Xiamen's transport authority says Metro stations have accessibility lifts and network-wide boarding ramps, and publishes the Metro hotline 0592-2506666 for advance requests for a boarding ramp or stair-climbing device. It also describes a one-to-one staff-help service for passengers who need it. Ask the operator about the current station, time, equipment, language, and assistance process before travelling; the notice does not promise immediate availability or an outcome for every journey.

  • Call ahead when a ramp, stair-climbing device, or staff escort may be needed, and keep the exact station, entrance, time, and direction ready for the operator.
  • At the station, approach visible staff before entering the paid area if you need help with a lift, platform gap, luggage, mobility device, child, or transfer.
  • For a medical or immediate safety emergency, use the emergency services and staff directions rather than treating a transport hotline as an emergency response route.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign visitors use a QR code on Xiamen Metro?

Xiamen's transport authority says the Xiamen Transport QR Code is available in Alipay's Transport feature and covers the Metro; its foreign-affairs office says foreign tourists can apply for it. The published announcements do not guarantee eligibility for every overseas account, card, wallet, phone, app version, identity check, gate, fare, transfer, or journey, so complete the responsible provider's current setup before a time-sensitive ride and keep a staffed fallback ready.

Can the Xiamen Transport QR Code be used beyond the Metro?

The transport authority says the code also covers BRT, regular buses, resident ferry routes, and Haicang rural transport. Check the current operator signs and live route conditions for the exact vehicle, fare, boarding area, transfer, and service time; the announcement does not make every connection or visitor itinerary automatic.

What should I do if my Xiamen transport code or Metro gate fails?

Step aside without forcing the gate, retain the phone screen and any receipt, and ask visible station staff to check the current entry record and supported next route before trying another code, gate, or payment method. If the issue is account activation or payment authorization, use the responsible provider's current support after the station has clarified the fare record.

How can I arrange accessibility help on Xiamen Metro?

Xiamen's transport authority says passengers can call the Metro hotline 0592-2506666 in advance to request a boarding ramp or stair-climbing device. Confirm the current station, time, equipment, language, and assistance process with the operator; the notice does not promise immediate availability or an outcome for every journey.
