Quick planning tool

Can I bring it to China?

Search common travel items for a cautious first check, then verify the exact product with your airline and official authorities.

Browse common items below.

Melatonin

Check first

There is no simple traveler-wide allowance for every melatonin product, dose, and route.

Before you pack it

Keep it in original packaging, carry a prescription or doctor note when applicable, bring only a personal-use amount, and check Customs plus transit-country rules.

Power bank

Restricted

Power banks belong in carry-on baggage and airline capacity limits apply.

Before you pack it

Confirm the Wh rating is clearly marked, protect the terminals, and check both your international airline and any China domestic flight operator. Mainland domestic flights also require a clear CCC mark and reject recalled models or batches.

Prescription medicine

Check first

Rules depend on the active ingredient, quantity, documentation, and whether it is controlled.

Before you pack it

Use original labeled packaging, carry the prescription and a doctor letter, verify the ingredient with China Customs or the nearest Chinese embassy, and declare it when required.

Fresh fruit and meat

Restricted

Fresh produce, meat, and other animal or plant products can fall under quarantine prohibitions or declaration rules.

Before you pack it

Do not pack them without checking the current Customs quarantine list. Declare agricultural and animal products instead of guessing at arrival.

Packaged snacks

Check first

Sealed packaging alone does not make every food item admissible.

Before you pack it

Check ingredients for meat, dairy, seeds, fresh produce, or other quarantined materials, keep the commercial label, and declare items when uncertain.

Baby formula, infant food, or special-diet food

Check first

Airport screening, airline carriage, Customs entry, and a family or medical-food backup are separate decisions.

Before you pack it

Keep the original label visible. Present only genuinely in-flight infant liquid dairy or necessary liquid medicine for security confirmation, check the operating carrier for the exact product, and use Goods to Declare when animal-product ingredients or entry status are unclear.

Vape or e-cigarette

Restricted

Airline battery rules, liquid limits, customs quantities, and local use restrictions may all apply.

Before you pack it

Keep the device in carry-on baggage with accidental activation prevented, never use or charge it onboard, and confirm current customs and destination rules.

Drone

Check first

Carrying a drone, clearing baggage, and being allowed to fly it in China are separate decisions.

Before you pack it

Check the operating airline's battery and baggage rules, then confirm official China registration, activation, aircraft-category, and airspace requirements before any outdoor flight. Do not assume a visitor or sub-250g drone is automatically permitted.

Travel-size liquids and toiletries

Check first

Airport carry-on limits, China domestic connections, duty-free transfers, airline baggage rules, and Customs checks are separate decisions.

Before you pack it

Use clearly marked containers of 100 mL or less for an international carry-on liquid bag, keep larger permitted toiletries in checked baggage, and recheck each China domestic connection. Ask Customs about uncertain ingredients, quantities, or declarations.

Perfume and aerosol toiletries

Check first

Perfume and toiletry sprays are screened as liquids, while pressurised, flammable, or defensive sprays can face extra transport restrictions.

Before you pack it

Check the exact label and ingredients, use a 100 mL-or-smaller container only where the carry-on liquid rule applies, and ask the operating airline about checked baggage. Do not pack pepper, tear-gas, animal-deterrent, or unknown sprays as travel toiletries.

Alcohol and hand sanitizer

Restricted

Customs declaration, airline baggage, alcohol strength, and disinfectant ingredient rules are separate checks.

Before you pack it

Check the label's alcohol percentage and active ingredient. Declare 1,500 mL or more of drinks at 12% alcohol by volume or above, check drinks as permitted, and do not pack alcohol disinfectant above 70% or hydrogen-peroxide disinfectant as baggage.

Laptop, phone, and spare batteries

Check first

Personal electronics are usually practical travel items, but spare lithium batteries are cabin-only and airline Wh limits apply.

Before you pack it

Keep the laptop with you when practical, shut it down fully if an airline permits it in checked baggage, and place each spare battery in a protective cabin-baggage pouch. Check the printed Wh rating and the operating airline before every flight.

Self-heating meal or hot pot

Restricted

A self-heating pack makes an otherwise ordinary meal an air-carriage issue; Customs entry for the remaining food is separate.

Before you pack it

Do not pack a product that still contains its heating pack for carry-on or checked baggage. If the pack is genuinely removed, check the remaining food's ingredients, keep its label, bring only a personal-use amount, and declare animal or plant products or uncertainty.

Lighter or matches

Restricted

Lighters, matches, and other ignition sources may not be carried or checked on a China flight.

Before you pack it

Remove them from every pocket, carry-on, and checked bag before going to the airport. Do not treat a Customs declaration, a small size, or a domestic connection as a flight exception; check a non-air route separately with its responsible carrier and authority.

Camping fuel or gas canister

Restricted

Fuel and pressurised gas are dangerous goods, not a carry-on-versus-checked-bag choice for a China flight.

Before you pack it

Do not pack fuel, a gas canister, or a fuel bottle for any flight segment. Leave it outside the airport and ask a campsite, retailer, or responsible carrier about a lawful non-flight or post-arrival option.

Fireworks, sparklers, or party poppers

Restricted

Fireworks-effect items are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage on a China flight.

Before you pack it

Remove fireworks, firecrackers, sparklers, party poppers, and similar items before going to the airport. A Customs declaration, small quantity, retail seal, or domestic connection is not a flight exception; check any non-air route or local event separately with its responsible authority or provider.

Seeds, seedlings, or plant cuttings

Restricted

Seeds and other plant material capable of reproduction are a Customs and quarantine issue, not an ordinary baggage choice.

Before you pack it

Do not pack them unless you have confirmed the exact item has the required official approval and quarantine certificate. If you are carrying an uncertain plant item, use the Goods to Declare channel; declaring it does not itself make it admissible.

Universal travel adapter

Usually allowed

A compact travel adapter is a normal personal item; it does not convert voltage by itself.

Before you pack it

Check that each appliance supports China's 220V/50Hz supply and use a reputable adapter rated for the device's power draw.

A planning aid, not customs clearance

Rules can change and depend on ingredients, quantity, battery capacity, airline, transit point, and inspection. When an item matters to your health or trip, confirm it with the relevant carrier and authority before travel.
